Shabbat Under the Stars

This week we will welcome Shabbat together as an entire school community when we gather at our beautiful campus for Shabbat Under the Stars.  This event is always one of my favorites as it is the first time that we are all together and it really means that the school year has started and everyone is in a rhythm.  Besides all of the yummy food that people bring to share, my favorite part of the evening is watching the pride in the faces of the parents as they see their students helping to welcome the Sabbath bride.  Through music and prayer, the students will gather together and demonstrate what it means to celebrate Shabbat as a member of the Adat Ari El community.

In his book The Sabbath, Abraham Heschel writes that when the days of the week were created they each had a couple, the Sabbath did not and complained to God.  God responded that the Community of Israel would be Shabbat's couple. We know that Shabbat was a day set aside to honor the work of creating the world. That Shabbat is a day when we can sit back and look at what we have accomplished during the week.  When we gather together as a Kehillah Kedoshah (a holy community) we are doing our part to make Shabbat holier.  I am looking forward to welcoming the community this Friday night at Shabbat Under the Stars and I hope to see you there!

Best,

Eric
