Leadership Blog: What is Language Arts Night?

Dear Parents:

You may have noticed an event on the calendar coming up very soon - Language Arts Night - Thursday, November 8, from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. What you may have also wondered is … what is this event and why should I be there? Well, I'm here to give you the inside scoop on this fun and informative evening for parents and students.

What is Language Arts Night?
Language Arts Night is a celebration of the ways our students use and engage with language. This can be the reading and writing they do in English and in Hebrew, it can be the ways that our students use language to communicate with each other and/or adults, it could even be the special vocabulary used in Math and Science.

At this event, each grade will exhibit work that showcases what they have done so far this year with language in a variety of educational, creative, and hands-on ways.

What is special about this year's Language Arts Night?
This year, many of our grade levels will be displaying their work around their “Difference Makers” statements. These are the statements that each class wrote in answer to the question: “How are we difference makers?” I think you will be amazed and impressed by the depth of their thinking.

What else will be happening during this time?
Our book fair will be open, you will have a chance to purchase ADAT swag with our ADAT Shop, and you will have a chance to interact with fellow parents across all grades of our community.

If you have any further questions about Language Arts Night, please don't hesitate to contact me at any time. We can't wait to see you there!

Shabbat Shalom,

Lauren

Last year, we partied together at Back to ADAT's Future. Save-the-date and join us this year, as we go back to the '90s on May 4, 2019 at Valley Village, 91607. Dude, it will be all that and a bag of chips!

Builders of Jewish Education

On Tuesday, October 16, 2018 eight lay and professional leaders from Adat Ari El Day School expanded their skills through a series of workshops featuring Nanette Fridman of Fridman Strategies. Nanette is an internationally respected leadership coach, consultant, trainer and author, with over 20 years of experience working with nonprofits.

Each of Nanette's workshops focused on “ambassadorship” as a catalyst for growth and engagement in our schools.

Nanette began her day with a workshop for Day School Development, Admissions and Marketing professionals which included Adat Ari El's Shara Peters, Sarah Schultz, and Ariana West. That workshop was followed by a session for Early Childhood Directors with Andrea Jaffe and Ori Zadok. That evening Shara Peters, Zach Schwartz, Leora Smith and Kristin Weiss participated in BJE Leading Together: BJE's Board Development Workshop. Since October 2017, BJE Leading Together Cohorts have had the opportunity to learn from widely recognized experts in the field about the challenges and opportunities they face in their roles as school leaders. Individualized leadership coaching has also been available for each school.

Funding for this BJE program was provided by a generous grant from the Glazer Family Foundation and other private donors. BJE's Center for Excellence in Early Childhood and Day School Education enjoys significant support from the Jewish Federation.

For more information contact Rabbi Jim Rogozen, BJE's Director, Center of Excellence in Early Childhood and Day School Education at jrogozen@bjela.org at 323.761.8622.

Interested in joining a Chavurah here at Adat Ari El?

A Chavurah is a group of families or individuals who meet on a regular basis to celebrate Jewish life, socialize, and learn together. It's a terrific way to get to know others at Adat Ari El, essentially creating a smaller community within the larger one. Members must make a commitment to the group to meet regularly, usually at least once a month. What you choose to do when you meet is up to you! You can go to services together, share lifecycle events, go on a hike, watch movies, have speakers at your gathering, etc. Each Chavurah decides the types of activities to participate in and will periodically meet with staff at Adat Ari El to share experiences, review goals, and make sure the group is meeting the needs of its members.

Please click here to let us know your interest and availability so we can start connecting you to your Chavurah.

Library Birthday Book

We would like to invite you to participate in an exciting opportunity to contribute to our library and honor your child's birthday by purchasing a Library Birthday Book. This program will raise money for the library and excite kids about reading.

If you would like to participate, send $18 (Chai) on your child's birthday, and your may child come to the library and choose a new book that's designated for this program.

For $18 donation, the student gets a sticker with their name, occasion, and adult's name placed in the book.  You then get to take the book home for a week to read and enjoy. Then, bring the book back to the library to be added to the library's circulation!

We hope you'll keep ADAT's library in mind during this year's child's birthday and help the library grow. Please see the image of the dedication sticker below.

Havdalah Highlights

We start each week gathered together as a school for a Havdalah ceremony, during which we highlight students who we have noticed acting in ways that carry out our mission. Because we are so proud of our students, we wanted to share their stories with you!

Milo M., 1st grade: Debra and Ms. Raben were standing at the doorway of Animal Encounters. Milo got up and came over to them and said, “You guys are welcome to come in and join us. We have rabbits.”

Abby Y., 6th grade, took time to send an email to check in on her teacher when he was absent.  "Abby also was in the office after the Earthquake exercise.  She was in line to buy a bagel and a 4th grader was lamenting that she was hungry but had no snack. Immediately Abby said, ""I can share my snack with you, don't worry.""

Elianna A. and Maya K. in second grade ran to get ice for a friend who was hurt at recess
