Leadership Blog - Learn Something New

Dear Parents:

I recently read that a cure for feeling stressed or overwhelmed is to go learn something new. Learning something new requires full engagement. You can only really learn when your full attention and effort is given.  Sadness and stress have no room in a fully involved self.

Next month there are two opportunities to be immersed in new knowledge:

One is an adult art class taught by ADAT art teacher, Mimi Klabon. The other is learning internet safety from Lori Getz, a nationally known expert on the subject.

Create paintings inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe through a step-by-step process guided by expert artist Ms. Mimi.  There are two different sessions, each made up of four classes.  Sign up for one session or two.  The cost, which includes supplies and refreshments, is $65 per session.  With a limit of 8 students, you are advised to sign-up right away.  To do so, send me an email.

Back by the popular demand of ADAT parents, Lori Getz will give us the latest information we must know to raise children in the age of ever-changing age of the internet.  The infinite opportunities to interact online are both positive and nefarious.  Lori Getz helps us stay current and gives us the tools to parent children on the streets of the world-wide-web. Join us on October 23 at 8:30 am.

Immerse yourself in new learning and leave some stress behind by attending some adult education events. Let's test the cure and see if it works.

Sincerely,

Sari

In the Community

Register for our 3rd Annual Day School Family Shabbaton

We are excited to open registration for our 3rd Annual Day School Family Shabbaton at Camp Ramah - - Friday, November 2, 4:00 PM until Sunday, November 4 at 11:00 AM in Ojai. Last year was so much fun, and we are excited to build on our experience with all of our new and returning families. You can find the link to the registration page here.

Some highlights of our time together will include challah braiding, student-led Kabbalat Shabbat, creative Shabbat morning service with student Torah readers, an incredible ropes course experience (unless it rains, in which case we will have something else fun), hikes, yoga, Havdalah, campfire, FUN parent socials, and time to be together and build community.

We will have a Gan (nursery) for ECC age kids (2 and older), programming for TK & K, and programming for 1st-6th graders.  Depending on how many 7th grade and older kids we have, we will determine the best fit for them in this experience - either jr. counselors, or teen programming.  Please be advised that the Gan will be open at various times throughout the weekend (about 6 hours total) so that families will spend most of the weekend together.  Children in 2nd grade and older are encouraged to sleep in the bunks with counselors.  There will be evening Shmira (babysitting) in the lobby of buildings with kids sleeping in adult rooms. Adults have private rooms with bathrooms - motel style. Fee includes lodging, meals, and all activities.

Please note ways to get involved on the registration form-- we would love your help!

We are grateful to have generous sponsors again this year such that we can offer a discount of $250 per family to the first 30 families who register. A non-refundable deposit of $200 is due by Friday, October 5th in the office in order to confirm your reservation. The balance is due on Monday, October 22.  Please see registration form for full pricing information.

For more information or to register please visit the registration page.

Havdalah Highlights

We start each week gathered together as a school for a Havdalah ceremony, during which we highlight students who we have noticed acting in ways that carry out our mission. Because we are so proud of our students, we wanted to share their stories with you!

Liam S. in TK helped two friends clean up the puzzle pieces, even though he did not play with the puzzle

Amelia P. in TK shared her Tzedakkah with friends on Shabbat so that they wouldn't feel bad about not having any to give

Althea H. in Kindergarten was learning about the story of Noah, and has identified Noah as a difference maker.

Maya K. in 3rd grade saw someone get hurt and ran to the office to get ice.

Katriella W. in 3rdgrade came up to me to say she saw Elijah R. stop playing and help a friend when he got hurt. Kudos to Elijah for helping a friend and to Katriella.

Shira L. in 5th grade decided that an act of kindness was more important than winning. At lunch, she was playing the foursquare game and there is a younger child who often gets out. She was really upset about it and Shira chose to hit the ball very gently to her so she was able to hit the ball. Shira did this a few times so the younger child was able to stay in the game much longer then she usually does.
